Frames

In this category you find various types of frames, from the most basic to the most professional ones.

First of all, the material:

  • Steel (URC, acronym for UnaRuota.com)
heavier but it can be easily bent and modified  (if needed you can bring it back in its original shape).
  • Aluminum (Mad4One)  lighter and more rigid, however, you will not be able to modify its shape (if accidentally you bend it, you will not be able to bring it to its original shape). All our aluminum-frames are anodized.
For more info about this choice:

Anodising, the reasons of our choice

We have written a document in which we describe the Mad4One frames and how they have been designed. The shape, the material and the reasons of our choices. We hope you will find it interesting and useful :
How we developed the Mad4One's Frames. The reasons of our choices

It is important to check the width of the frame. You measure it at the base of the frame. This is important to be  sure that the hub fits to the wheel, they must have the same width.
Furthermore, check the width of the top of the frame, near the seat post.

For Trial it’s better to have a round crown frame without edges, your shins will be safe! This is valid also for mountain unicycle. The absence of edges makes your unicycle more comfortable and safe.

In Freestyle and other specialties we often perform tricks in stand-up. In this case the crown where you put for feet is very important. A flat crown compared to a round one offers a much better feeling and facilitates balance. The wider the crown, the more comfortable and user-friendly the frame is.
Also the presence of the anti-slip surface that ensure high security in the grip is a very important feature. For this reason our frames have two “false holes” made of solid.

Another characteristic to consider is the clearance, i.e. the distance between wheel and frame that tells us which tire can be mounted on our unicycle.

Having said that, however, each frame has been developed for a specific final use.

Pay attention to the weight! Is a lighter frame better than a heavy one?
Yes, if the frame does not lose in stiffness and stability. Frames that are too light do not last over time and also the performance is not at the top because a flexible frame absorbs energy. The final consideration is that there is also a limit to the lightness beyond which lightness becomes a defect.

As regards mountain unicycle: in this specialty almost all riders are using a disc brake system. In this case the frame should be equipped with the disc brake mounting tab. Please note that there are two mounting systems, one on the right and one on the left of the wheel, not all unicycles come with the disc brake mounting tab on both sides welded to the frame.

The URC frame in CrMo steel

Braking system and tire

The disc brake appears on the market around 2012 and, in recent years, it has radically modified  the way to control the unicycle in DH. 4 years have passed, and we can now say that the brake pad is over.
The traditional frames, that have been designed with brake pad attack are dedicated to a specific wheel size. In fact, in this case there is a frame exclusively for  the 24-inch wheel, the frame for the 26-inch wheel and so on.
We think that it is the right time, to think of frames NOT designed for the brake pad.

URC has developed its own frame for MUNI (...and not only...) in 3 sizes, not linked to a specific wheel size.

The frame is available in the following sizes: Extra-Small - Small - Medium - Large

On the  "Extra-Small" you can mount tires up to:

-  the 20-inch wheel with tire 20 x 4.00

On the  "Small" you can mount tires up to:

-  the 24-inch wheel with tire 24 x 4.00

-  the 26-inch wheel with tire 26 x 2.40

On the  "Medium" you can mount tires up to:

-  the 26-inch wheel with tire 26 x 4.00

-  the 27.5-inch wheel with tire 27.5 x 3.50

- the 28-inch wheel with tire 29 x 2.50

On the  "Large" you can mount tires up to:

-  the 27.5-inch wheel with tire 27.5 x 3.50

- the 28-inch wheel with tire 29 x 3.00

IMPORTANT: compared to the previous version (black-red-sea green, which mount traditional tires) the new batches starting from May 2017 have been designed with a 5mm wider clearance (2,5mm each site). This new design is ideal for FAT tire x 4.00. This new frame with  a wider clearance, is available in the colors mustard-silver-pink.

The URC frames are designed for standard hubs with 100 mm pitch (distance between the bearings).
The height of the frame, together with the length of the cranks, build the measure to consider when you define the size of our mountain unicycle based on the min. inseam length (Inseam is the length of the inner leg).

Below the frame height:

URC-Extra-Small = 45 cm

URC-Small = 49,5 cm

URC-Medium  = 53,5 cm

URC-Large = 55 cm

Thickness of the saddle: approx. 6,5 cm

URC-Extra-Small: with the 125-cranks we will have a min. inseam length of  (45 + 6,5 + 12,5) = 64 cm

URC-Small: with the 140-cranks we will have a min. inseam length of  (49,5 + 6,5 + 14) = 70 cm

URC-Medium : with the 140-cranks we will have a min.inseam length of (53,5 + 6,5 + 14) = 74 cm

URC-Large : with the 140-cranks we will have a min.inseam length of (55 + 6,5 + 14) = 75,5 cm

NOTE: if we shorten our cranks we reduce the min. inseam length, if we mount longer cranks, the inseam length will increase.

On the other hand, if we speak of the tire, the choice here is really wide.

The URC frame has therefore a second PLUS, I can buy a frame and different wheels, each one for a specific need / terrain / riding.

Always in the Mountain Unicycle framework we have also a valid option for the youngest or smallest riders, this is the MINI-MUNI with disc brake mounting taps. The perfect choice to learn since the beginning how to control your unicycle with the brake. The MINI-MUNI mounts the XS URC frame.

The MAD4ONE Muni frame of aluminum ALU 7005

MAD4ONE has developed its own MUNI frame in 3 different sizes, not linked to a specific wheel size.

The sizes are: Small - Medium - Large

On the  MAD4ONE- S  you can mount:

24-inch wheel with a traditional tire up to 24 x 3.00

26-inch wheel with a traditional tire up to  26 x 2.70

The inside width is 91 mm.

On the  MAD4ONE- M  you can mount:

24-inch wheel with a 24 x 4.00 fat tire

26-inch wheel with a traditional tire up to 26 x 3.00

27.5-inch with a traditional wheel up to 27.5 x 3.25

28-inch with a traditional tire up to 29 x 2.50

The inside width is 91 mm.

The MAD4ONE- L  has been designed specifically for the FAT tires lovers.

On this frame you can mount:

26" with a 26 x 4.00 fat tire

27.5" with a 27.5 x 3.80 fat tire

28" with a 29 x 3.25 fat tire

The inside width is 103 mm.

Once we have mounted our FAT tire the clearance keeps wide and this provides excellent control of your muni even on muddy terrain.

The height of the frame, together with the length of the cranks, is the dimension to consider when you decide the size of our unicycle based on your min. inseam length.

Below the frame height:

MAD4ONE- S  = 49,5 cm

MAD4ONE- M  = 53 cm

MAD4ONE- L  = 55 cm

Thickness of the saddle: approx. 6,5 cm

MAD4ONE- S  : with the 140-cranks we will have a min. inseam length of  (49,5 + 6,5 + 14) = 70 cm

MAD4ONE- M  : with the 140-cranks we will have a min. inseam length of  (53 + 6,5 + 14) = 73,50 cm

MAD4ONE- L  : with the 140-cranks we will have a min. inseam length of (55 + 6,5 + 14) = 75,5 cm

NOTE: if we shorten our cranks we reduce the minimum inseam length however, if we mount longer cranks, the inseam length will increase.

The MAD4ONE Muni frames have been designed for hubs with 42mm bearings, with 100 mm pitch (distance between the bearings).

The sizes M and L are available also in the LONG-NECK version

Here the vertical tube is 10cm longer than the standard ones.

With the LONG-NECK frame the min. leg lengths are extended by 10 cm.

The LONG-NECK is available in the following colors: blue, flash green, titanium, bronze. On request we can anodize it in one of the 13 different Made in Italy colors you prefer. Just tell it!

The LONG-NECK is important for taller riders. It offers greater stiffness and a more stable placement of your saddle.

Combined with our MAD XXL seat-post this frame ensures the right position of your legs even if you are more than 2 mt tall.

MAD4ONE- LONG-NECK - M  : with the 140-cranks we will have a min. inseam length of (63 + 6,5 + 14 + 28,5) (9cm of our MAD XXL seatpost) = 112 cm

MAD4ONE- LONG-NECK - L  : with the 140-cranks we will have a min. inseam length of (65 + 6,5 + 14 + 28,5) (9cm of our MAD XXL seatpost) = 115 cm

A leg-length of 115cm corresponds to a height of approx. 2,30 mt.

                                 .

We have noticed that some Producers insert in their frames a very long seatpost in order to increase the robustness and stiffness of the frame.

This is not necessary with our frames. It is sufficient to have a length of 10-15 cm to ensure the best stiffness. The ecess tube is just unnecessary weight.
